PREFACE

This edition of the Student Body Government’s (SBG) bylaws was drafted over the 2024-2025 academic year following a SBG-wide consensus for improved justice and representation in all areas of the student body. Unfortunately, the past few years have seen multiple changes and great challenges. The last time the bylaws were updated was in 2018, before COVID-19 changed many things concerning Gallaudet operations. While this redraft is not as extensive or detailed, as found in the previous edition’s preface, this is a very important edition regardless. It was also a primary goal of the Mora-Guettler Administration to achieve this.

In this edition of the bylaws, efforts to strengthen Student Media Organizations as found in Article VII were made, as well as provisions to streamline Homecoming event planning and distribute responsibilities as equally as possible among all organizations. Other changes are also found in Article I, II, VIII, IX with the aim of modernizing the SBG’s bylaws in accordance with rapidly changing and ever-more versatile times.

These changes include, but are not limited to, the renaming of positions, consolidation of specific roles and their responsibilities, strengthening parliamentary procedure standards, and establishing hard deadlines to ensure there is a nearly fail-safe system that will continue to keep the SBG and its subsidiaries constant operation across administrations. As the incumbent President continues into his second term, it is almost certain we are to see more changes aligning with the renewed goals of the Student Body Government of Gallaudet University.

It is my hope that this edition of the bylaws stands to serve all of its readers well, and to ensure there is always to be order and discourse in our valuable democracy, that will serve as signs of vitality and continued success of our predecessors.

Cordially submitted on July 16th, 2025,

Chief Justice Clark Barrett
